Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

The World Heritage site offers excellent opportunities to serve as extracurricular learning space for scholars, where they can discover the unique natural and cultural landscape and at the same time get experiences through unforgettable events. Thanks to the education for sustainable development, young people should obtain skills and knowledge to competently tackle the future development and to take reasonable and forward-looking decisions.

A network of educational institutions and the World Heritage Centre offer tools, courses and modules for all school levels which enables scholars to get familiar with questions regarding sustainable development.

In cooperation with different educational institutions and partners several school projects have been launched in the World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch. They aim at using the existing resources in order to contribute to an attractive and long term education system.
We offer educational material for teachers and basic and advanced training courses. The platform supports schools and teachers in organization, planning and implementation of their projects.

The education for sustainable development (ESD) has been promoted by the UN in the framework of the «Decade for Education for Sustainable Development» (DESD 2005 – 2014) and serves as model for the educational programs in the World Heritage Region.
The product «Learning the Alps» has been elaborated during the past 4 years and first school classes have been instructed recently. The product will be implemented between 2016 – 2019 and firmly established in the schools of the region and consequently adapted to other visitor groups. It is foreseen to elaborate a new product in 2017 , the «Actors’ Training», which will be addressed to directly involved people, especially the local actors.
