The World Heritage Association aims to promote and implement sustainable development under the UNESCO World Heritage Site label, in accordance with the Charter Konkordiaplatz and the Guidelines based on the Charter. Designation as a natural heritage site not only requires preservation of the World Heritage Region in a strict sense, but also carries an obligation to promote sustainable development in all the associated communes in the surrounding region.
The associated communes laid the foundations for this approach by signing the Charter of Konkordiaplatz in 2001, which calls for sustainable development of the economy, community, and ecology of the World Heritage Region. It is the declared intention to preserve the region and all of its diversity for both present and future generations.
In March 2005 the Charter was signed by additional communes on the perimeter: Charter of Konkordiplatz - Additional Communes.
