The Aletsch forest

The Aletsch Forest, with its unique population of Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra), extends around the tongue of the Aletsch Glacier. Low temperatures, piercing winds and long winter seasons limit the growth rate of the trees. Swiss stone pines compensate for their slow growth with particularly long lives, frequently reaching an age of 600 to 700 years. At Riederfurka, next to the Aletsch Forest, Pro Natura runs an information and conservation centre.
